The long awaited book from the renown artist/conceptual designer Syd Mead who is famed for working on films such as Blade Runner, Star Trek and Tron. It's a must for any science fiction fans who wants to delve into Mead's visual of the future world. Robert Chang is a renown concept artist in the industry. One of his painting 'Melancholic Princess' has been circulating the internet forums and chatrooms often associated with some ridiculous urban legend like something horrible will happen if you stare at the girl's eyes in the picture. Really it was just one of many Chang's digital painting, nothing to do with the urban legend of course. Though the picture does give off a feel of eeriness.

Andrew Ley: finished concepts

Andrew Ley is a British concept artist at it's truest. Looking at his designs you can feel his not just merely created visual concepts but more like products that can be purchased in the real world or sometimes in the future. I also like how he present his works in the form of advertisements.

Joao Ruas is definitely one intriguing artist. His artworks are quite bizarre and surreal, not the usual stuff you would get here. I find the theme in his stuff to quite dark and almost have a Gothic touch to it.

Hoang Nguyen

I haven't seen that many of Hoang Nguyen's works and there isn't much available on the internet. However these are most of the images I can find. As you can see his depictions of fantasy female characters are just compelling. Also the grunge style backgrounds are really gives the artwork a very aged look. This is definitely Hoang's distinctive style.

Francis Tsai's is pretty much a household name in the world of American comics. His rendition of the classic Marvel's comic superheroes like Spiderman and Hulk are just excellent. He has also done work for fantasy card games like Magic: The Gathering which equally deserve the admiration.

Gez Fry

Gez Fry's illustration draws great influence from Japanese pop culture, indefinitely manga and anime. However that would be an unfair statement as I feel his style stands out from the typical cliched anime illustrations. You'll also notice some pieces almost look like old Japanese woodblock prints.

This Month's: Digital Artist issue 06

Since I'm a frequent buyer of art related magazines, I'll do a monthly preview of each of the with anything that I think is interesting. Digital Artist is quite a new magazine that is targeted at artists and designers, so good mix of both concept art and graphic designs. It also features some amazing tutorials by professional artists. This month's issue is pretty good; the manga feature was decent but they should have put in some more manga tutorials with the feature.

I discovered Emrah Elmasli's works through the magazine ImagineFX (issue 11), which was the highlight of the entire magazine. Emrah explore a wide range of themes from science fiction to fantasy art, and unlike most artists who are only good at one or the other, he seems to excel in both. I really like the character designs, especially the robot ones. One of the most notable thing is the Turkish influence in some his illustrations,which is a reflection of the artist's cultural background. I think this element allows him to produce very interesting artworks.

Sparth aka Nicolas Bouvier

If you like Science Fiction images, then you'll definitely like Sparth's artwork. His exploration of the theme often give you a sense of grandiosity and a lot of it reminds me of the concept art from the Blade Runner movie by Syd Mead. Once of his most notable project that he has worked on was for the Assassin's Creed video game.

Kai Lim is a fantastic artist from the Imaginary Friends Studio in Singapore. I've been keeping up with his works on his Deviant Art profile for quite a while and I'm always anticipating to see his latest works. I always loved how he capture the motion of his characters in the middle of the action, which not many artists I can think of are capable of pulling off successfully or even attempt. That's why his artworks often have a lot of energetic impact. The theme of his works is usually based around science fiction, his mechanical designs are just amazingly detailed.

Art of Akira Yamaguchi

This is not typically concept art, but Akira Yamaguchi is one intriguing artist. He belongs to a type of art called Neo Nihonga, a new generation of artists who are reviving and keeping the traditional Japanese art form alive. The style is reminiscent of Ukiyo-e paintings with the thick outlines and bold colours. The themes are a fusion of old and new modern subjects, like samurais riding on motor powered horses.

The concept art of Alice in Wonderland

To coincide with the release of Tim Burton's latest film Alice in Wonderland this weekend. Even though these images have been around for a while I just feel like revisiting the beautiful concept art just for the sake of the event.

You could say the latest film adaptation of Lewis Caroll's novel stays very true to the original Disney animation and visuals, some may criticize it for being 'unimaginative'. Nevertheless I'm still looking forward to watching it, with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp combo I don't think you can go wrong. If the film's aesthetics live up to these 2D images I'm sure it'll be amazing in 3D.

Feature artist: Jason Chan

Jason Chan has been an artist I've been following for quite a few years. His female character designs were one of the things that attracted my attention; there's a certain mix of Gothic and sci-fi elements to them. Girls with white hair seems to appear in his work quite a lot. The other fantasy type artworks for video games and game cards are also awe-inspiring.
